The devs are using Unity. Unity supports Occlusion Culling. Lag solved for low-end machines.

They could also use that horrid feature of Billboards.

I do like the idea of dense forests. Sparse trees just dont give you that immersive feeling of "OH F**K!! WTF WAS THAT BEHIND ME!!" - and vision is 20ft.... pants = soiled

@Finndawg
It is indeed in the wrong section.

@Strider @ShotgunRagtime can one of you gents please move it to suggestions?

"too many games (arma included) have forests which are basically a green field with a few trees dotted around, im talking about forests where you cant see more than 20 meteres in front of you cause of bushes etc."

Old forests that haven't been logged in centuries tend to be just giant trees. The smaller bushes and stuff can't get any sunlight because of the canopies. I do agree however there should something other than bare grass or dirt.

Without any Occlusion Culling and graphics set to Fantastic (no vsync, FXAA, ani-filters etc)

PLUS 50 000 trees, a mountain and some basic shadow maps, the FPS drops from an even 40 down to 25.

When i say 50000 trees, i mean 50000 trees right around the player, zero optimisation done for lower end specs.

Basically, tree porn.

I am sure with the right time spent on optimising the gpu options plus some clever occlusion culling, the devs could make a dense enough forest. Or at least try to.

Might be worth looking into how "The Forest" has used Unity to build their wooded areas... very dense w/o major lag that I can see.
