You could easily make these from items you find. I can think of 2 possible versions - 1 small version and a larger version.

Small Version

Materials
  • 2 old shopping hand baskets (metal would be preferred as they are heavy and will sink)
  • Chicken wire (meshed wire) from an old fence/hen coop/dog run/etc
  • Length of rope - 1/4 inch diameter will do
  • 1 empty 2L or 3L plastic drinks bottle
  • Some wire
  • Tin snips or pliers
  • 1 hacksaw
  • Bait (raw meat, raw fish, road kill, etc)
Method - a lot of detail and not need in game but helps me draw the image of the trap
  • Take the shopping baskets and remove both handles - keep them for now
  • Take one of the shopping baskets and with the hacksaw cut a hole around 10 inches long by 8 inches wide - only make the cut on 2 of the long sides and 1 of the short sides
  • Use force and bend this 'flap' you have made down till its around 35 degrees in angle
  • Now get the length of chicken wire and cut a section so that it is 3/4 the length of the basket and the same width
  • Turn the basket you are working on over and fix the chicken wire you have just cut about halfway down the basket - use some of the wire for this
  • Next angle the chicken wire section so that it is around 45 degrees and fix it in place to the sides again with the wire
  • Get the chicken wire and cut a folded out box shape in the wire that will make a 3X3 inch cube. Cut this out and then construct the cube using the wire to tie it together - don't fasten the final side however just yet
  • Fasten this cube to the bottom of the 2nd basket using the wire again making sure that the unfastened side is face up
  • Add your bait into the cube and secure the lid shut with wire
  • Take the basket you worked on originally and place on top of the 'bait basket' making sure that the opening we cut is at the top - secure the baskets together with wire
  • Attach the handles we removed earlier to the sides of the bottom of the 'bait basket' and attach the rope to each handle. Take the rope from the handles over the top of the basket and leave a gap of around 2 feet
  • Get the rest of the rope and attach to this rope loop we have made
  • Make sure the plastic bottle is screwed tight and sealed and then attach the rest of the rope
  • DONE!
Large Version

Materials
  • 1 old metal shopping trolley
  • Chicken wire (meshed wire) from an old fence/hen coop/dog run/etc
  • Length of rope - 1/4 inch diameter will do
  • 1 empty 2L or 3L plastic drinks bottle
  • Some wire
  • 5 Small wood planks
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Tin snips or pliers
  • 1 hacksaw
  • Bait (raw meat, raw fish, road kill, etc)
Method
  • Take trolley and remove everything from under the basket section (wheels, frame, etc)
  • Take wooden planks and create a small pallet the size of the open top of the trolley basket
  • Cover the planks on one side with chicken wire
  • Get the chicken wire and cut a folded out box shape in the wire that will make a 3X3 inch cube. Cut this out and then construct the cube using the wire to tie it together - don't fasten the final side however just yet
  • Fasten this cube to the top of the chicken wire platform using the wire again making sure that the unfastened side is face up
  • Add your bait into the cube and secure the lid shut with wire
  • Affix the chicken wire platform with bait cube to the top of the trolley with the bait side inside the trolley
  • Turn the trolley trap over and open the flap on the trolley (the big one under the handle)
  • Once it is angled at around 65 degrees wire it in place
  • Take the rope and secure it to both side of the trolley
  • Take the rope from the sides over the top of the trolley and leave a gap of around 2 feet and then tie on the rest of the rope to this loop
  • Attach the plastic bottle to the other end of the rope
  • DONE!
The idea in both cases is that the traps are easy to climb up and fall in but impossible to climb out due to the negative slope from inside and the overhang it makes.

Take your trap and throw it into the sea. Leave it for a while then return and haul it up. Crab or lobster for dinner! You just need to find a nice white wine to go with it now ...

Grow grapes and make your own wine :D. That sounds like a great idea (all of it).
