Headgear ImmersionReading a thread about body awareness reminded me how much I liked immersion with headgear so I wished to go more in depth on the subject of immersion through headgear. Some of my favorite games and mod's have added headgear immersion, some examples are Metro 2023, Stalker COP: Misery and Fallout3 New Vegas: Project Nevada. Metro 2023 and Misery worked mostly on gas masks and I really liked the gritty claustrophobic feeling I got from putting on an old dirty gas mask while trekking across a hazardous area.
Project Nevada I feel was by far the best, they put a large degree of detail on headgear items in first person. One example is wearing glasses and actually being able to tell you were wearing them, you could see tiny scratches and imperfections on the lens as well as seeing a slight tint if there was one on the glasses the same goes for goggles. Another example is wearing a hat or helmet and being able to see the brim of the headgear, you could see the scared metal brim of an old military helmet on the top border of the screen. Another interesting aspect of the immersion was a light delay of movement on the brim of a helmet or similar item, what I mean is when you would look to the left, right, up or down there would be a slight delay in the movement of the brim. I felt this simulated the character looking around with there eyes instead of stiffly looking around like a robot like the old games.
I really think that adding headgear immersion like adding more body immersion would make the game more visually interesting as well as being able to show functional ques such as showing active visual degradation on a headgear item if the head has been struck.
(It's really hard to find project Nevada Pics showing off helmets, glasses and other things besides gas masks. I would create some but my Project Nevada is kind of wonky I think I need to uninstall most of my New Vegas mods.)
So what do you guys think, it might not be something that needs to be added right now but when they have time I think it would work really well and make the experience that much more interesting. I plan on adding more info and pic's from various games as I find them, if you guys find anything pertaining to immersive headgear feel free to share it here I will post the info or pic up top with a shout out. As usual share any ideas if you have them and I'll see you guys later.
